Elementary Age

Kindergarten through fifth grade (age 5 through 12) is considered elementary age for students. Speech and language skills are going under a tremendous transformation during this time in a child's growth and development.

Receptive Language: How language is understood or the way a that we understand our world (listening, seeing, touching).

How can you help?

Share picture books and magazines with your child and talk about categories of things (e.g. children, colors, animals, things you play with, things you wear, things you eat). Have your child point to the things you name and tell you something about them (e.g. size, shape, color, how it feels, how it tastes, etc.)

Use number words and color words often when speaking with your child.

For older children talk about sequencing or the order of items (e.g. what happens first, next, last)

Give your child directions of increasing length and complexity (e.g. "open the box and bring me the ball")

Take turns using items you find around the house and talk about how they are used.

Talk about what you are doing (e.g. "I am brushing the dog")

Talk about what your child is doing (e.g. "Oh look! You are putting the circle in the puzzle")

Expressive Language: How language is used or the way that wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas are shared (sounds, gestures, words).

How can you help?

Ask your child questions that require a choice (e.g. "Do you want the blue ball or the red ball?)

Ask your child to talk about his/her likes and dislikes

Ask your child to talk about what is in his room (e.g. names of the toys, colors, clothing in the closet)
