Fast forward a few years and...a really wonderful Christmas gift from my husband and presto! An ipad2 to call my own and the rest is history...numerous downloads from the app store (some free, some not so much).
My most recent find has revolutionized my online therapy (Yes, I am able to see students in their homes who live over five hours away...I even conducted therapy with a student who was on a golf course in Florida this week over 19 hours away from me...but telepractice is a conversation for a soon to come blog). This new program for your PC or MAC is called Reflector and it allows me to literally reflect the image of my iPad onto my computer screen so that all of my apps worth talking about can be shared with the students I treat online over the internet. Amazing! This program is by airsquirrels.com and it is every bit worth 12.99.
I have to say that one of my favorite articulation apps is Articulation Station Pro by Little Bee Speech. I have tried other apps and none compares to this. It allows for words, sentences (love the rotating sentences) and two different levels of stories with multiple choice comprehension questions, so YES! It can be used for students with language needs. The pictures are wonderful, it includes a matching game, numerous options for scoring and the list goes on and on. There is a lite version too, so you can try it out before purchasing the whole shebang.
Super Duper Publications at superduperinc.com has a ton of really nice little flash cards called "Fun Decks" that can be loaded onto the ipad. I love these little fun decks (ha! no more lugging) I use Plurals, Regular Past Tense, Irregular Verbs, Inferences and Wh- At School quite regularly in therapy. Their Wh- Questions app is a great little purchase as so many students need assistance in answering and asking Wh- questions. This app makes it fun with multiple choice, the decoder a matching game or drag and match.
Wise Hopper is another fun little "frogger-style" app (for those of you from the Atari generation) that teaches students to identify different parts of speech while safely navigating their insect of choice across a stream.
One of my favorites by all4mychild is the Bag Game. This is wonderful for categories, attributes, turn-taking, inferences, vocabulary development and asking and answering questions. I highly recommend this one for SLPs to use with their students as well as parents to reinforce skills worked on in their child's therapy.
I'll be sharing more apps worth talking about in the near future. Pop back in soon!Update for "Apps Worth Talking About":
I explored the free version of the Story Maker app. Today, I paid 4.99 for the full version! Let me just tell you that I love this app.
I have been in the field of Speech-Language Pathology practicing with my CCC's for 20 years now, so I have been studying in this field since Social Stories were first introduced by Carol Gray in 1991. I have spent hours preparing and printing and personalizing these types of stories for numerous students over the years. Well...no more! The Story Maker app by Super Duper allowed me to make a social story tailored to a 3 year old who has trouble with following directions and running (elopement is what we used to call it). I presented his social story to him today and he held his Mom mom's hand and "walked" through the events in his new story with a smile on his face!
Here are some pages (names have been crossed out for confidentiality purposes)
I highly recommend this app, and I am saying this of my own accord as I have no affilition with Super Duper (other than consumer) and receive no gratuities.
