Early Langugage Development

Ways that you can help:

Echo Expansion Modeling:

Say what the child says and expand upon it by adding one word.  No demand is placed on the child to repeat the adult, just move on with the conversation.

For example:  child says: "bubbles"
adult models and expands: "more bubbles" or  "blow more bubbles"

Parallel Talk:

Put words to the activity the child is engaged in.
No demand is placed on the child, you are providing a model using words for actions they are doing.

For example:  child is playing with a toy house and placing the baby in the bed...
                      adult models "baby in bed"

Self-Talk:

Puts words to an activity that you are engaged in.
No demand is placed on the child, you are providing a model for using words for actions you are doing.

For example:  You are putting getting the bathtub ready for your child's bath.
adult models "water on", "warm water", "toys in tub", "bath time", "get in tub _______"
